The Indianapolis Tennis Center on the campus of IUPUI was
officially named a United States
Tennis Association Certified Regional Training Center by USTA officials at a September 26th press conference at the facility.
The Press Conference was lead
by Andrea Calvert-Sanders, USTA Midwest Director of Junior Tennis. Jose Higueras, the Director
of Coaching for USTA Player Development, and Martin Blackman, USTA
Senior Director for Talent Identification and Development were also on-hand for
the announcement. In addressing the crowd of over 50, both men praised the ITC and
listed the numerous qualifications that gained ITC the prestigious designation.
Higueras spoke of the USTA’s excitement in bringing a Regional Training Center to
Indianapolis and the fact that Indianapolis- and ITC specifically- is home to many
of the nation’s top junior players.
Also addressing the crowd were
IUPUI Assistant Vice Chancellor, John D. Short and ITC Director, Kathy Risacher.
Short welcomed the USTA to IUPUI and talked of how the sports facilities at IUPUI
have aided the civic engagement mission of IUPUI.
Risacher thanked her dedicated
staff for their contributions, and paid tribute to the late former directors of
the facility, Todd Witsken and Rick Van Horn, who laid the groundwork that made
the designation possible.
A reception followed the press-conference. In attendance
were many members of the local tennis community as well as members of the IUPUI
administration.
